Transition Towns

Also known as the Transition Network and Transition Movement, the Transition Towns initiative began in 2005 in Kinsale, Co. Cork and is a response to climate change and peak oil. It aims to build public awareness around sustainable living and to lower our carbon footprint. Transition Towns is a movement to transform towns and cities into resilient and vibrant communities that depend less on fossil fuels and more on renewable energy, and the consumption of locally produced food. Rob Hopkins who had worked with students in Kinsale to develop the concept brought it to Totnes, England from where it expanded further, and now there are over 400 communities participating in the Transition movement worldwide.
